Coos County ARES/RACES August 2010 Monthly Report

Training was held at the New Coos Bay Fire Station for a tour of new city EOC and familiarization with the ARES/RACES equipment. Training on message handling was giving at our training meeting and during the on-the-air nets. Training on batteries was given at our training meeting.13 members of Coos County ARES/RACES and 2 members of Douglas County ARES/RACES provided communications for the 30 K “Circle the Bay” foot race. This provided experience in use of tactical calls and participation in a directed net.We have removed four people from our roster. They cannot continue to participate for personal reasons. We particularly wish to recognize Glynn McCready, W7WAT, perhaps the longest serving ARES member in the Section. I don’t know when he first joined, but he was SEC in 1954. He has been active in the NTS for a similar period of time. Dan Bissell, EC, W7WVF

SW Oregon Report

Now that the weather makes driving safer, I'm trying to get out to see what is going on.I have pretty well covered the coast and will start working on the more inland areas. I did work with both the Southern Oregon ARC and Rogue Valley ARC to get their paper work in for affiliation, and it appears to have worked.Florence. Central Oregon Coast ARC. Corporate name: Oregon Coast Emergency Repeater, Inchttp://www.w7flo.com/club call sign W7FLOThe club has made a lot of progress since my last visit. They now have 70 members. There is increased emphasis on community service and recruiting young hams (which they consider 15 years old or younger). These two goals have worked together, as they have found community service the thing that has kept the interest of the young Hams. They currently have 5 active young hams. One has his general license who worked HF at Field Day. This has motivated the others to work on their general licenses as well. They have made major upgrades to their voice and digital repeaters, extending both their range and reliability. (I can now check into their net from my home south of Bandon.) Coos County. Coos County Radio Clubhttp://www.coosradioclub.net/Club call sign K7CCHThe club is affiliated and is a Special Service Club. It meets monthly, has a weekly net, supports a number of community bike rides and foot races, maintains a repeater, has active Field Days, holds an annual Hamfest, and teaches licensing classes. (VE testing is done by the local repeater association.) It has a close working relationship with Coos County ARES/RACES and the repeater association. Port Orford.A new club has formed in Port Orford. Port Orford ARCqsl.net/k7pohClub call sign K7POHI have contacted them at least three times with offers to help. They have formed a W5IY VE team and have strong feelings about providing emergency communications to their community. They are making progress on putting up a repeater on a city site, with the support of the City Manager, who is an Amateur Radio Operator. There are a number of new technicians in the group, and there is intensive training to get them upgraded. Gold Beach.Web page is currently down due to server problems. The Gold Beach "Hamsters" meet regularly, support an excellent local repeater, hold a weekly net, are always glad to see me and do NOT want to be organized into a club. The county has just hired a new Emergency Manager. He owns and operates the restaurant where the "Hamsters" meet, and they all like him. Brookings. Pelican Bay ARCThe club maintains a repeater, has a weekly net and monthly meetings. It has an excellent monthly newsletter. The club supports community activities, such as the Azalea Festival Parade. The club has a close working relationship with Curry County ARES. Western Country Cousins. This is a Nation Amateur Radio group, with geographical regions, aimed largely at RVers. The Western Cousins have membership in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. In addition to their daily net at 9:00 PM on 3970, they have an annual picnic, which serves as the official annual meeting with change of officers. This year, the picnic was in Harris Park in Brookings on Saturday, July 31st. I attended representing the Section. They seemed very pleased to have someone from ARRL. I alerted Pelican Bay ARC and several members also came out to welcome the Cousins. The welcome seemed appreciated and they said they will plan to have their picnic in Oregon again next year.Dan, W7WVFASM Southwestern Oregon

Oregon Section Club News May 2010

The Western Oregon Radio Club has completed installation of a complete Icom D-Star repeater system recently. All three digital voice repeaters are in operation as well as a 23cm D-Star digipeater. The voice repeaters are able to communicate through the US national trust server and connect throughout much of the world using callsign linking or repeater linking. The repeaters provide useful coverage in much of the Portland-Vancouver area and allow digital cross band communications between D-Star users locally. These repeaters are open for any amateur to use and may be accessed by visiting D-Star users who have registered with a D-Star system anywhere in the US. The WORC continues to operate a large linkable system of FM repeaters on 10m through 23cm Bands in the Northwest corner of Oregon, providing coverage from Astoria to the Cascades, From Longview WA to south of Corvallis. For information about the Western Oregon Radio Club systems, see www.worc.info on the internet. The Radio Amateurs of the Gorge new club website at W7RAG.com is now up and running. Before we had a website, hardly anyone besides members of the club knew we existed. Now, information about the club will be searchable and readily available to the public. The website will be a repository of newsletter articles, how-to’s, and features about events club members are involved in. Informativethings like frequency charts, net schedules, and lists of upcoming events can now reside on thewebsite, making them available from any computer. No longer will you have to be at your own desk or computer to look at a newsletter; you can now see it even if you are at a library or internet cafe. The hams in Lincoln County report that REACH THE BEACH will be using the Mt Hebo 147.220 repeater all day on May 15. Approximately 3000 bicycles are heading for Pacific City from the Willamette Valley on that day. The safety, health, and welfare of all the cyclists is managed by a network of ham radio portable, fixed, and mobile units. Feel free to listen and monitor the activity on 147.220. The McMinnville Amateur Radio Club (MARC) is honoring Betty Anderson, N7DRP who is turning 90 this month, who is one of MARC charter members. Congratulations Betty! The Radio Operators Association of Dallas (ROADS) May meeting will be a dinner with limited “meeting”. It will be held on May 20th at 6 PM at Farroll’s Restaurant, located on Hwy 99 adjacent to the Polk County Fairgrounds. This event will be held in the banquet room and will NOT include the usual business meeting. Guests are welcome. If your club has any news you would like to share with the rest of the Oregon Section, then please forward it to me. n7pat@arrl.net73,Pat Roberson, N7PATAssistant Oregon Section Manager, Administrative

Today April 7 the Klamath County ARES/RACES group received an Award of Commendation for our help in the Klamath County H1N1 Incident Management Team. The ARES/RACES group provided at least 1 ARES members to one to three "PODs", (Point Of Distribution) a day, three days a week during October, November, December and January, Three weeks a Month. These PODs were at almost all of the schools in Klamath County. The ARES members were at each POD as back up communications, but they also worked with the PODs to help with registering the students, and generally assisting the Nurses and Klamath County Health Department employees who were giving the shots. The ARES members also helped with a free distribution day where the Klamath County Health Department and the Klamath County Incident Management Team provided over 600 inoculations for the H1N1 virus in about 6 hours.Dennie DunkesonWA7YPREC Klamath County ARES

I am the Chief of Communications for an event called The Oregon Trail Rally. The Oregon Trail Rally is an annual three day event, kicked off at Portland International Raceway on Friday afternoon May 14, 2010 and then travels up the beautiful Columbia River Gorge using the rural roads of Hood River and Wasco Counties, Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16, 2010. The Oregon Trail Rally is a “Stage Rally Race.” What is Stage Rally? Quite simply, it is a flat-out race over closed sections of rural roads by modified production automobiles. It is different than most car races in that: 1. Competitors race one car at a time against the clock, usually at one-minute intervals.2. Flat-out racing is done on limited access roads, blocked off from "civilian" traffic, rather than on prepared tracks.3. Events are usually several hundred miles long, often lasting for several days. Each car has a driver and a co-driver.4. In-between the racing stages, the cars travel over public roads (transit) and are required to obey all traffic laws. Expected entrants include defending three-time Rally America champion, MTV Nitro Circus star, and extreme sport icon Travis Pastrana, DC shoes founder Ken Block, BMX legend Dave Mirra, Formula D champion Tanner Foust, multi-talented drivers Andrew "ACP" Comrie-Picard and Matthew Johnson, plus most of the fastest rally drivers and co-drivers in North America. I am contacting you today because you have been identified as the contact person for your club. An event of this size requires many amateur radio volunteers to provide communications support. I would like to extend my personal invitation to any interested member of you club to come out and enjoy a great event. Participation for all three days is not required. Training will be provided at a required new volunteer orientation. Volunteers usually receive a commemorative event t-shirt and invitation to the event rewards ceremony and dinner on Sunday night. If you wouldn’t mind passing along this information to your membership and have any interested person’s contact me as soon as possible. If you require any additional information or if you would like me to attend one of your monthly meetings, please don’t hesitate to contact me.Sincerely, Brien F.
