Oregon Section News - May 2012

Hi everyone,I am long overdue for a section news and wanted to go ahead and get one out. I will update my calendar to ensure that I get these out monthly. Please feel free to send me information that you would like me to announce in the news.I am sure you are all looking forward to SeaPac. It is always a good time - a great time to see people around the section that we don't see often. Unfortunately I have just learned that this year I will not be able to attend for the first time. I am scheduled for surgery at the hospital in McMinnville on May 31st and expect to be in the hospital for 2-3 days and have at least a 3-4 week recovery afterwards. Fortunately Mark is a good cook and will take care me! All tests so far have come with good results so I expect the results of all this will be good but it is a situation I need to take care of as soon as possible in order to make sure nothing serious is wrong. I felt it was important to take the earliest surgery date I was offered. I will provide more of an update after I am home from the hospital and plan to send out the June section news while I am relaxing in my recliner recovering from surgery. This will be the first surgery I have had in my entire life so this will be a new experience for me. Because of the expected recovery period I will probably need to stay close to home for field day instead of traveling to other areas of the state as I had planned.I believe that most of the section appointees will be at SeaPac so feel free to visit with them about their activities in the section. They are listed here:Assistant Section Manager - ARRL Membership Development - Everett W Curry Jr, W6ABMAssistant Section Manager - Southwestern Oregon - Dan Bissell, W7WVFAssistant Section Manager - Youth and Mentoring - Russ Mickiewicz, N7QRAssistant Section Manager - Administrative - Pat Roberson, W7PATAffiliated Club Coordinator - Dan Bathurst, WA7ABUOfficial Observer Coordinator - Everett W Curry Jr, W6ABMSection Emergency Coordinator - Vince VanDerHyde, K7VVState Government Liaison - Kevin E Curry, KA7KYQSection Traffic Manager - D Scott Gray, W7IZTechnical Coordinator - Ron Fial, KO7VI pulled out a couple of interesting announcement from my email. Earlier this year I was notified that the Seaside Tsunami Amateur Radio Society had elected all women board. I suspect this is somewhat unusual in ham radio.
Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology

Each summer the ARRL offers multiple sessions of the Teachers Institute (TI) on Wireless Technology, a 4 day expenses paid professional development seminar. TI has provided teachers from elementary school to the university level with tools and strategies to introduce basic electronics, the science of radio, space technology, satellite communications, weather science, as well as micro-controllers and basic robotics in their classrooms. The goal of the TI program is to equip each teacher with necessary foundational knowledge, hands-on learning, and generate the inspiration for teachers to continue to explore wireless technology and adapt relevant content into their classroom instruction. The cost is virtually free for the participants and graduate credits are available through Fresno Pacific University. Participants are expected to be able to complete all requirements during the class time. To qualify, applicants must be an active teacher at an elementary, middle, high school or at a community college or university, or in a leadership or enrichment instruction roll in an after-school program. An Amateur Radio license is NOT required. For more information or brochure, contact them at etp@arrl.org [Submitted by W7PAT]

Calling all Operations ... Calling all Operators ... Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race

Calling all Operators….. Calling all Operators....The Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race would like to invite Amateur Radio Operators to join us for the January 2011 Sled Dog Race.	During January, Volunteers and spectators gather in Joseph, Enterprise and Halfway Oregon to support the running of the Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race. This Race brings Mushers and their Teams from across the country to run through the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, which contains the Eagle Cap Wilderness, for both a 100 and 150 mile event. The Race is a Qualifier for the legendary Races in Alaska and Canada, the Iditarod and Yukon Quest respectively. For safety and logistic support, Checkpoints are established across the Trail with the 2011 proposed Checkpoints being Salt Creek Summit and Ollokot Campground, and a possible remote checkpoint.. Headquarters for the Race are located in Joseph at two diverse locations. These Checkpoints will be staffed with Volunteers to provide Shelter, Food, Veterinarian care, Logistic support, snow-machiner transportation and of course a multi-layered Communications Network. Race organizers recognize the proven success of amateur radio and are counting more than ever on another first rate operation! We are excited to invite Amateur Radio Operators to provide vital Communication support to the event. This year, we invite experienced Amateur Radio Operators to exercise their Net skills in an exciting winter community service setting. The Checkpoint Communications Volunteer will be vital to passing 3rd party traffic as well as providing support of critical situations and SAR efforts. Law Enforcement from Wallowa and Baker County, SAR Teams and US Forest Service personnel regularly participate as Volunteers and in a professional role during the Race. The Communication Volunteers are vital to providing real time information and coordination for general messaging, Logistics and in support of critical situations through various and appropriate Communication modes. To learn more..please email me at ecxsafety@gmail.com for further information. 73s KK7JX Julian Pridmore-Brown ecxsafety@gmail.com
