Welcome to the ARRL Oregon Section website
My goal is to make sure this website is always current during my term(s) as section manager. I want to have as many communication methods available as possible to hear what you in the Oregon section have to say. This is one of many ways for me to hear you. I welcome any suggestions for content. With the help of the section leadership, it will be added to continually. I look forward to working with you and am making plans to visit all the affiliated clubs in the state during my first year in office and hope to be able to participate in some of your activities. I have visited some ARES groups as well.

Also please keep in mind that this website is a work in progress and we will do our best to keep it updated with the information provided by our amateur radio community. Currently login access is limited primarily to the Oregon section cabinet. I am beginning to provide access to individuals designated by the DEC's for updating ARES-related information. As we make more features available you will be notified via the arrloregon Yahoo Group. Join the group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrloregon/.

I also send regular informational emails to the yahoo group. Much of what I send will appear in the next SM report, but by being in the yahoo group, you get advance notice of the news. I also forward messages that come from the ARRL to section managers that may be of interest as well.

If you have information that you want posted or updated on this page, please send to me at ab7zq@arrl.net. If you submit news to that link, please notify me that it is there so that I can go look for it. We receive a lot of spam messages at that link.

Oregon Section News July 2012
SECTION NEWS JULY 2012

Hi everyone. I know I said I would send out a section news while I was recovering from surgery but I don't seem to have gotten everything done that I expected to while I was recovering. I took more naps than I expected, even though I didn't need to take any of the narcotics they gave me after I got home. I was fine with just the prescription-strength Ibuprofen.

Everything came back from pathology as benign after surgery so that is good news. They did an open procedure and took everything out intact just in case it didn't come back benign but I was fortunate. I was released from the hospital on Sunday June 2nd (while you were all leaving Seapac). I am back to work at my part-time job at the state hospital but I am coming home early since I get tired and uncomfortable sitting in a chair all day. I come home and take a nap, then I'm up late.

Because of all that I missed Seapac as well as field day activities. I did get a call with some NTS (National Traffic System) messages sent to me from field day sites and received some field day messages in Airmail.

Beginning this year, ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) started the Drew Holmes (W7GER) Memorial Field Day Award. The ARES unit who operates at their EOC (Emergency Operations Center) or COOP (Continuity of Operations Plan) site as a class F station and makes the most contacts will receive that award. If your ARES unit operated on field day, please make sure Vince Van Der Hyde, K7VV, receives your contact records. Mark and I had dinner at the Spirit Mountain Casino buffet tonight and we ran into him and Frank Gruber. He said he hasn't received any field logs yet for this award other than OEM (Oregon Emergency Management).

I will be going down to the Coos County hamfest this weekend. At the moment it sounds like my husband is planning to go with me. We'll know for sure when I'm ready to head out the driveway. I made reservations at the Mill RV Park for both Friday and Saturday nights. I know I'll be too tired to drive home after hanging out at the hamfest all day. That way I can take my time getting down there on Friday and have a leisurely trip back home on Sunday. I hope to see many of you down there.

I haven't gotten a lot of news well organized right now since I got way behind on my ham radio email and just got caught up quickly over the weekend. I will be going to the Hoodview club on Thursday night so I will get myself current on what is going on before then.

Oregon Section News - May 2012
Hi everyone,

I am long overdue for a section news and wanted to go ahead and get one out. I will update my calendar to ensure that I get these out monthly. Please feel free to send me information that you would like me to announce in the news.

I am sure you are all looking forward to SeaPac. It is always a good time - a great time to see people around the section that we don't see often. Unfortunately I have just learned that this year I will not be able to attend for the first time. I am scheduled for surgery at the hospital in McMinnville on May 31st and expect to be in the hospital for 2-3 days and have at least a 3-4 week recovery afterwards. Fortunately Mark is a good cook and will take care me! All tests so far have come with good results so I expect the results of all this will be good but it is a situation I need to take care of as soon as possible in order to make sure nothing serious is wrong. I felt it was important to take the earliest surgery date I was offered. I will provide more of an update after I am home from the hospital and plan to send out the June section news while I am relaxing in my recliner recovering from surgery. This will be the first surgery I have had in my entire life so this will be a new experience for me. Because of the expected recovery period I will probably need to stay close to home for field day instead of traveling to other areas of the state as I had planned.

I believe that most of the section appointees will be at SeaPac so feel free to visit with them about their activities in the section. They are listed here:
Assistant Section Manager - ARRL Membership Development - Everett W Curry Jr, W6ABM
Assistant Section Manager - Southwestern Oregon - Dan Bissell, W7WVF
Assistant Section Manager - Youth and Mentoring - Russ Mickiewicz, N7QR
Assistant Section Manager - Administrative - Pat Roberson, W7PAT
Affiliated Club Coordinator - Dan Bathurst, WA7ABU
Official Observer Coordinator - Everett W Curry Jr, W6ABM
Section Emergency Coordinator - Vince VanDerHyde, K7VV
State Government Liaison - Kevin E Curry, KA7KYQ
Section Traffic Manager - D Scott Gray, W7IZ
Technical Coordinator - Ron Fial, KO7V

I pulled out a couple of interesting announcement from my email. Earlier this year I was notified that the Seaside Tsunami Amateur Radio Society had elected all women board. I suspect this is somewhat unusual in ham radio. Their board members are:
President Pat Love KE7RBM
Vice-President Terry Williams KE7QFR
Secretary Carolyn Lee KE7OXP
Treasurer Vianne Patterson KE7ZFM

Below is the current Oregon STM report.

Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology
Each summer the ARRL offers multiple sessions of the Teachers Institute (TI) on Wireless Technology, a 4 day expenses paid professional development seminar.  TI has provided teachers from elementary school to the university level with tools and strategies to introduce basic electronics, the science of radio, space technology, satellite communications, weather science, as well as micro-controllers and basic robotics in their classrooms. The goal of the TI program is to equip each teacher with necessary foundational knowledge, hands-on learning, and generate the inspiration for teachers to continue to explore wireless technology and adapt relevant content into their classroom instruction. The cost is virtually free for the participants and graduate credits are available through Fresno Pacific University. Participants are expected to be able to complete all requirements during the class time. To qualify, applicants must be an active teacher at an elementary, middle, high school or at a community college or university, or in a leadership or enrichment instruction roll in an after-school program.  An Amateur Radio license is NOT required. For more information or brochure, contact them at etp@arrl.org
